How do I know if my dog is overweight? "How do I know if my dog is overweight?"Signs of an overweight dog:Place your hands on both sides of your dog's rib cage and try to feel his ribs. If the ribs are protruding and feel quite boney, your dog is probably underweight and should receive more food and/or be taken to a veterinarian. If you can't feel your dog's ribs at all, he or she is probably overweight. Confirm that your pet has been receiving the correct amount of food for his or her weight. If you feel your dog is overweight and it's not because he has been receiving too much food, he should be taken to a vet who can evaluate the dog to see if there may be health conditions, such as a thyroid condition.
Overweight Dogs don't have waistsBreeds vary, but most dogs who are of a healthy weight have a waist. A dog's waist isn't viewed from a frontal view as with humans, To view your dog's waist, look at him from the side. His abdomen should tuck up immediately behind his rib cage. If there is no tuck upward after the rib cage, or worse, if the abdomen appears to fall below the rib cage, your dog is probably overweight. A dog whose waist is a dramatic tuck behind his rib cage is probably underweight and should receive more good quality food and/or be seen by a veterinarian.
