BHA and BHT in our food and treats? Absolutely not, and here's why.
You won't find BHA or BHT in our pet foods and treats.
BHA (butylated hydroxyanisole) and BHT (butylated hydroxytoluene) are preservatives that are widely used in the pet food industry. BHA is a mixture of the isomers 3-tert-butyl-4-hydroxyanisole and 2-tert-butyl-4-hydroxyanisole. BHT is also known as 3,5-di-tert-butyl-4-hydroxytoluene; methyl-di-tert-butylphenol; 2,6-di-tert-butyl-para-cresol.
Sound delicious, don't they?
Both BHA and BHT are used as preservatives of fat and are approved for use in the United States, but many consider them carcinogens, which means they may actually cause cancer and tumors.
BHA and BHT may contribute to carcinogenicity or tumorigenicity (medical talk for "foods and treats with these chemicals may give your dog or cat cancer or tumors.").
The State of California has listed BHA as a carcinogen. Oxford University states that BHA "may be harmful by ingestion or inhalation" and also lists it on its list of known carcinogens. Yet, you will find these chemicals in many grocery store pet foods and treats for pets. There are links below to articles at the National Institutes of Health, again implicating BHA and/or BHT as possible links to various health risks, including damage to organs and organ tumors. BHA and BHT have also been linked to behavior changes and liver damage.
You won't find this stuff in our pet foods or treats!
Most or all of our pet foods and treats are made of human grade ingredients and contain no BHA or BHT. If you want, you can safely share food and treats that you get in our store with your pet.
Most of us view our pets as members of the family, yet many of us innocently but mistakenly feed our four legged members of the family food that we ourselves shouldn't eat. In fact, much of what is in store bought dog foods and treats, and cat foods and treats, is prohibited for use by humans!
It does matter. If it's not good for us, it's not good for our pets!
If they're not already enjoying healthy, nutritious foods and treats that contain no artificial ingredients, today can mark a new day for those members of your family that have four legs! Today they can begin enjoying food that's good enough for you to eat yourself ... wholesome foods and treats that meet their needs for delicious taste, fun texture, natural, wholesome ingredients, and foods that meet special dietary needs including hypoallergenic foods, high protein foods, grain-free, organic, etc.
As for this writer, at the end of this sentence I will be observing a moment of silence in sadness for the countless number of innocent animals who were forced to endure unspeakable pain, suffering and horror in laboratories so that more and more chemicals could be created for a profit, tested, sold, and then in some cases, exposed as being unsafe.
